Frederiek Simons      artist, weaver, writer

Frederiek Simons (b. 1996, NL)

I am an artist, weaver, and writer based in Amsterdam. Through my work runs a tangible thread that is spun from questions about materials, hierarchies, traditions, patterns, shapes, and their relations. By means of artistic research, I aim to unravel them and investigate their potential to be interlaced in new ways.

In 2019 I received my BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and I am currently part of the rMA programme Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. My work and research have been presented in various contexts, such as the Icelandic Textile Center, Textielfestival x Leiden, Fashion Biennale Arnhem, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

My writing has been published in print and online, among which metropolism.com, Simulacrum, and Locus-Magazine for Cultural Sciences. Besides that, I have gained work experience at several cultural institutions, such as State of Concept and De Nederlandsche Bank. Since 2021 I also work as a CELTA-certified language teacher.
