metakínisi 6
embroidery
32 x 21 cm
2020
What does an embroidery of a walk look like? During the Covid-19 lockdowns in Greece, there were six types of metakínisi (Greek for commute or movement) that granted citizens permission to leave the house. Texting my name and the number 6 to an official number allowed me to go on a two-hour walk around my neighbourhood. During these daily walks, I photographed things that caught my eye; a napkin on the ground, a beautiful door, graffiti on corrugated sheet metal. Back at home, I translated these observations into embroideries.
The fabric and some of the yarns are dyed with household products, such as onion skins, avocado peels, hibiscus flowers, and pomegranate rinds.

Textile artist, researcher, and writer based in Amsterdam. I work with textiles and other material forms as a way of thinking and researching. I thereby treat these materials as tools to expose and unsettle taken-for-granted views and naturalized routines of daily life.
