Can one song be the starting point for a series of artworks? This project was initiated by drawings I made while listening to the dramatic song Bloed, Zweet en Tranen by famous Dutch folksinger André Hazes. As I continued to work with the subject matter of these drawings, I became fascinated with roots, rhizomes, turmeric, threads, lines, and knots.
All the while, what I hadn’t realised was that my intuitive research had been unfolding exactly the way rhizomes grow; not in one straight line, but in many different directions.
The result is a series of drawings and mixed media works. Among the techniques used are weaving, embroidery, (photo) etching on cotton, natural dyeing with turmeric, PVC plastic sheets pressed onto cotton, and video.

about
I am a textile artist, researcher, and writer based in Amsterdam. Through my work runs a tangible thread that is spun from questions about materials, hierarchies, traditions, patterns, shapes, and their relations. By means of artistic research, I aim to unravel them and investigate their potential to be interlaced in new ways.
