through her floor, my ceiling

essay
2020

What drives us to take a peak inside other people’s homes and lives? What sort of image are we able to construct in that way? What are the limitations of the eye in trying to capture daily life? And can our ears offer a more ‘authentic’ glimpse of lives that are not our own? An essay in four parts in which I discuss the above questions alongside references from Johannes Vermeer to Big Brother, media theory, and my own experiences of living in an anti-squat flat in Amsterdam Osdorp.

Full title: Door haar plafond —mijn vloer— heen. Een glimp van het leven van een ander.

about

I am a textile artist, researcher, and writer based in Amsterdam. Through my work runs a tangible thread that is spun from questions about materials, hierarchies, traditions, patterns, shapes, and their relations. By means of artistic research, I aim to unravel them and investigate their potential to be interlaced in new ways.
